What Is the True Cost of Ecommerce Technology?
The visible platform subscription is only one part of an ecommerce technology stack. Apps, plugins, supporting business software, payment processing, platform transaction fees, implementation, migration, themes, integrations, and specialist services can materially change the total. This calculator keeps those cost groups separate so a lower platform fee is not mistaken for a lower overall operating cost.
Technology Stack Cost includes the core platform, apps, and supporting software. Processing and Transaction Fees remain separate because they are commerce-volume costs rather than software subscriptions. Combined Cost brings the two recurring groups together. One-time costs appear in first-year and migration analysis but are excluded from recurring run-rate charts.
Platform Cost vs. App Cost
Core platforms often gain functionality through apps. That flexibility can be useful, but the add-on layer may become larger than the platform subscription. The Add-On Multiplier compares apps and supporting software with core platform cost. It is a descriptive ratio, not proof that an app should be removed.
Ecommerce App Pricing Models
Fixed apps remain stable at the current volume. Per-order apps scale with entered orders. Per-user apps multiply their unit price by purchased users. Usage-based apps charge only for usage above included units. Revenue-based apps apply a percentage to entered revenue. Tiered or manual products use the current monthly cost and an optional future monthly cost; the calculator never invents vendor tier thresholds.
Billing cycles are normalized into monthly equivalents. Currency changes formatting only and does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.
Payment Processing vs. Software Cost
Payment processing is modeled from payment volume, percentage fees, transaction counts, and fixed transaction charges. Multiple payment methods can divide volume and transactions using explicit shares. If those shares do not total 100%, the calculator warns you without silently changing them. Platform transaction fees and other transaction charges are shown separately from processor fees.
Cost per Order and Cost as a Percentage of Revenue
Cost per order divides the selected monthly cost by monthly orders. Percentage-of-revenue metrics divide monthly cost by monthly revenue. When orders or revenue are zero, the metric is unavailable rather than divided by zero. Gross contribution after technology and processing is not net profit; it excludes labor, inventory, fulfillment, taxes, refunds, marketing, and many other operating costs.
Fixed vs. Volume-Sensitive Costs
Fixed costs can create operating leverage as order volume grows, while per-order, revenue-based, usage-driven, and processing fees move with sales activity. The forecast models only the relationships you enter. Product tiers, discounts, negotiated rates, inflation, taxes, and vendor price changes are not assumed automatically.
Small App Creep and Category Overlap
Several low-cost apps can add up to meaningful spend. The adjustable small-app threshold shows their combined monthly and annual cost. Category overlap is a review signal only: two or more products in one category may support different workflows, markets, compliance needs, or data requirements.
Comparing Ecommerce Stacks
A fair comparison includes the full recurring run rate and one-time migration costs. A cheaper alternative may still cost more during the first year. Migration payback is shown only when the alternative has a lower monthly run rate, and it assumes current volume unless growth is explicitly modeled.
ChoiceRidge Ecommerce Cost Methodology
Calculations are deterministic and use only user-entered values. ChoiceRidge does not fetch current vendor prices, infer compatibility, generate vendor tiers, or declare an automatic winner. Affiliate relationships do not affect formulas or calculated results. Forecasts are scenarios, not predictions.
Calculator Privacy
Store metrics, platform costs, app names, processing fees, forecasts, and alternative-stack assumptions are calculated and stored locally in your browser. This tool does not submit those detailed values to ChoiceRidge. Clearing browser data, using private browsing, changing devices, or removing site data may delete saved analyses.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in ecommerce technology cost?
The core platform, direct platform add-ons, apps, plugins, and supporting software.
Are payment-processing fees included?
Yes, but they are reported separately from technology subscriptions and also included in combined cost.
How is cost per order calculated?
Monthly technology or combined cost is divided by average monthly orders.
Does ChoiceRidge use current vendor pricing?
No. Every price and assumption comes from the user.
How is migration payback calculated?
Entered migration cost is divided by modeled monthly run-rate savings when the alternative is less expensive.
Is my store data sent to ChoiceRidge?
No. Detailed calculator data remains in local browser storage.
